Education for Sustainable Development

Sustainable development means shaping our ONE WORLD so that everyone can thrive in it. Whether in Africa, Europe, Asia or America – in the future everyone on this planet should be able to live their lives without environmental destruction, war or hunger. The goal is a fair and healthy life for everyone!

Education for Sustainable Development or global learning is a pedagogical concept that is linked to this objective. Using various methods, it introduces people to what life in ONE WORLD means. It assists the better understanding of global connections, reflection on one’s own role in the world and the search for ways to make the world fairer and more liveable for everyone.

In the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals education for sustainable development is its own goal target. It states:

“By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through Education for Sustainable Development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.”

The Song Contest “Dein Song für EINE WELT!” (Your song for ONE WORLD) is also a contribution to Education for Sustainable Development. It calls on all participants to address global matters of the future and discuss the diverse and fair co-existence in our ONE WORLD. Using music, the competition enables an international exchange on these topics.

Furthermore, just like its big brother - the School Competition on Development Policy - the Song Contest wants to bring Education for Sustainable Development into schools. In doing so both competitions are based on the Curriculum Framework Education for Sustainable Development, which explains how the concept of Education for Sustainable Development can be applied in the individual school subjects.

How music and Education for Sustainable Development can be combined is shown in the teaching material for the Song Contest and the music subsection of the curriculum framework.
